FUZO Property client and Shortland Street star Ben Mitchell has been in the news, making the cover of NZ Property Investor magazine for his impressive portfolio and rags-to-riches story. Ben grew up in Hamilton with a single mum who worked three jobs and cousins “from the Once Were Warriors tribe”, leaving home and school at 15. But he was determined to succeed, using his win at Mr New Zealand to propel him in his move to Auckland to work in entertainment.
Having secured his fantastic long-term role in Shortland Street, Ben used his disposable income to start buying property. He began buying in his hometown of Hamilton in joint ventures with friends and family. Soon, though, he wanted to accelerate his returns, and asked the team at Fuzo how to make his money work harder.
We helped him develop his new strategy of buying full sections, building granny flats and recycling the equity to fund the next purchase. Last year our full-time property buyer Steve McMenemy helped Ben find five West Auckland properties that stacked up, simultaneously creating positive cashflow and big equity ($100,000 to $350,000 on each project). Steve will be busy again this year on Ben’s behalf, as the actor plans to buy another five properties and keep building his portfolio.
“For me, it’s all about the team around me,” he told the magazine. “You’ve got to surround yourself with completely different minds.”
